EARLY LOBBs

LOBB, in Devon, was recorded in the Doomsday Book. The first person known to bear the name was recorded in 1136 - Goderie Lobb. He was recorded as being the priest of St Anne's Chapel, in the parish of Branton Burrows, in Devon. Indicating the spread of the surname by 1273, there is reference to a court case concerning an Adam LOBB in County of Norfolk, for grazing sheep on someone else's land. Other early records of the name include Philip de Lobbe in the Book of Fees for Devonshire, in 1387. In Hampshire, a case was brought against Richard Lobb and three others for stealing fish to the value £40, they were the servants of Sir Thomas West - they pleaded that were acting under their employer's instruction. Theophilus Lobb, the son of Stephen and Elizabeth Lobb who was christened at Fetter Lane on 17th August 1678. During the reign of King Charles II, some confiscated lands were returned, but most remained in the hands of newcomers. The Lobb name may have arrived in Ireland in the 17th century, when 1000 acres of land in Ulster was available for £200, in Connault for £300 and Leinster for £600.
